JAXBIZ, the nonpartisan political organization affiliated with JAX Chamber, has endorsed Darryl Willie for the open District 4 seat on the Duval County School Board.
Willie, executive director of Teach For America in Jacksonville, knows the importance of building community partnerships to improve public schools and will be a tremendous asset to the Duval County School Board, JAXBIZ chair Dane Grey said.
High-quality public education for Jacksonville families is critical for the community and a top priority for JAX Chamber. JAXBIZ is in the process of interviewing candidates for the open seats on the board. District 4 includes parts of Northwest Jacksonville and downtown.
“Darryl is an experienced, proven leader who can step in on day one and make a difference on the School Board,” Grey said. “Darryl is committed to world-class public schools in Jacksonville and has experience directing budgets, as well as leveraging and maximizing resources to serve children in our community.”
Willie has classroom experience with Teach For America before moving into different roles within the national nonprofit that connects recent college graduates with teaching positions in challenged schools. Willie directed district strategy, alumni affairs and community partnerships for Teach For America Jacksonville before being named executive director in 2015.
Willie is a mentor at Ribault High School and serves on the boards of the Northwest Jacksonville Community Development Corporation and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Willie graduated from North Carolina State University, where he served as student body president, and earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Georgia.
The primary election for Duval County School Board is in August.
